Our Guide to Natural Toothpastes

Toothpaste is something we use every day and there are some great natural options if you are trying to cut out toxins.  But you may be wondering how effective they are and also which ones have the texture and flavour you and your family will like.  So we have put together this guide on the best natural toothpastes to suit all the members of your family.

Why make the switch to natural toothpaste?

Have you ever looked into the ingredients in your favourite toothpaste?  You may be surprised to find that it contains potentially harmful ingredients such as Triclosan, Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS), artificial colours and flavourings, and foaming agents.  Some of these you wouldn’t want to put on your skin, let alone in your mouth!

Triclosan is an antimicrobial toxic chemical that has been banned by the FDA for use in soaps but leading toothpaste brands still use it in their toothpastes.  Have a look at your toothpaste label and you will probably find Triclosan listed as an active ingredient.  Most likely at 0.03% w/w which is the highest possible concentration legally allowed.  Considering we put toothpaste in our mouths daily and it is often swallowed by kids, using a natural alternative is a much safer option!

Do natural toothpastes actually work?

Natural toothpastes use herbal extracts and plant based ingredients which have antibacterial properties that naturally eliminate bacteria and keep your teeth and gums clean and fresh.  They also have added minerals like Calcium Carbonate and gentle abrasives such as Bicarbonate Soda and Activated Charcoal to help remove plaque.  Instead of artificial flavourings they use natural plant based oils and extracts, and have added soothing agents such as Calendula and Aloe Vera to soothe and calm sore, irritated gums.  With so many different options available there really is a natural toothpaste to suit everyone, no matter how fussy they may be!

The natural toothpastes we recommend

If you love mint toothpaste then you will like these natural options that are bursting with minty freshness.  They are all flavoured with natural mint oils to give you that cooling fresh flavour.  Riddells Creek Organic Mint Toothpaste is certified organic, fluoride free, and packed with herbal extracts and natural ingredients that keep your teeth fresh and clean.  It has a soft mousse-like texture and added Calcium to promote healthy, strong teeth and Bicarbonate Soda to help remove plaque.

If you are after a natural option that is very similar to regular toothpaste in feel and taste than Grants Fresh Mint With Tea Tree Toothpaste is a good choice.  It has a strong mint flavour and the added organic Tea Tree Oil has antibacterial properties that reduce bacteria and inflammation caused by gingivitis.  It also contains Magnesium and Calcium to help keep your teeth and gums healthy and strong.

Grants Mild Mint With Aloe Vera Toothpaste is similar to regular toothpaste in taste and feel and is formulated to gently clean and promote healthy teeth and gums with added Calcium and Magnesium.  With a mild mint flavour and the benefits of organic Aloe Vera, it is great for anyone with mouth ulcers or sensitive teeth and gums.

When it comes to natural whitening toothpastes one of our favourite brands is My Magic Mud and their range of activated charcoal toothpastes.  It contains gentle abrasives including Activated Charcoal and Bentonite clay, which gently clean your teeth and help to remove toxins and teeth stains, giving you fresher breath and whiter teeth.  It’s a black coloured toothpaste with a thicker consistency and is free of foaming agents that are found in regular toothpastes.  With four different flavours including SpearmintPeppermint, Wintergreen, and Cinnamon Clove, there is flavour to suit everyone!

Finding a toothpaste that your kids love can be a little tricky, especially for those that don’t like the taste of mint.  The Jack N’ Jill Natural Toothpaste range is free of mint and has five delicious flavours including Blueberry, Strawberry, Banana, Raspberry, and Blackcurrant.  They are all fluoride free, flavoured with organic natural flavours, and have added Calendula to help soothe sore and irritated gums.  In their range they also have some super soft bristled kid’s toothbrushes which are biodegradable.

If you are looking for natural kid’s toothpaste that is certified organic we recommend Riddells Creek Organic Children’s Toothpaste range.  These fluoride free toothpastes are made with delicious organic natural flavours including Strawberry, Banana or Orange.  They have added Calcium to promote healthy, strong teeth and organic Aloe Vera to soothe sore or irritated gums.  They do contain a small amount of peppermint extract though, so if your little one doesn’t like mint these may not be a good option.
